Meeting Minutes

Wednesday, April 5, 2006
1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
Nebraska Library Commission, Crane Room

  1. Jeff Pabian led the meeting since Greg was unable to attend.
  2. Cookie Policy.

Jeff said that the Cookie Policy Group met recently and went over the latest draft of the latest Cookie Policy and made some revisions.

The current policy has been in place since Spring 2002 when the mode was "don't use cookies."

Our current proposal should bring us into what is considered an acceptable Cookie Policy for the times.

Jeff went through the new policy (Revised Cookie Policy V2 - March 28, 2006) line by line. Several webmasters had questions and Jeff did a good job of answering them. We put it to a vote, first to see if anyone objected to voting on the policy at this meeting and then to actually vote on whether to adopt the policy. The policy was passed overwhelmingly. We talked about IMS having their own Cookie Policy approved by the NITC and ours is similar. Jeff even compared it to other states Nebraska Online works with and again it's similar.

Jeff, Lori, and Greg will present the new policy to the NITC Government group next meeting, which is April 13, 1:30 p.m., in Lincoln (see update below). The webmaster's group decided that the NITC group will put the wording we have voted on into the standard format that NITC policies use (for an example, please see the Branding Standards.

The Technical Panel met, and approved posting the document for the 30-day comment period. They changed the language from "policy" to "standard," but otherwise, it is the same.

The Technical Panel will consider any comments received at their next meeting (June 13) and will make a recommendation to the NITC. The NITC will then either adopt or reject the standard at their next meeting (probably early August). Also, there will need to be some additional follow-up with the State Records Board regarding the old cookie policy.

  3. Miscellaneous.

Jeff talked about how Nebraska Online can provide agencies who house their websites at NOL access to statistical data about their web pages. He also mentioned other products for determining how users get to and route around an agency's web site.

The State Home Page will have a new design in about three months.

  4. Adjourn.
