Meeting Minutes

Wednesday, February 7, 2007
1:30 - 3:00 p.m.
Nebraska Library Commission, Crane Room

  1. Help Reduce Spam.

Ron Ritchey with HHSS attended the meeting with the purpose to inform the group about the Honeypot hosted at ITS. Ron is requesting that the state webmasters activate more links to the false email addresses set up as part of the trap to make the effort more successful. The more activated links to the false email addresses, the more likely attackers will hit those false emails and the better the filter group (for the IronPort) will be able to create rules to help block those same and additional spam. IronPort is the state’s email security provider. Not every state agency uses IronPort, but the goal is to eventually get all state agencies to use it.

Juli Jergens with the CIO handed out a one-page document describing the best way to activate the link on a site for those who choose to help the cause.

  2. Chair-Elect Nominations/Election.

Jamie Lillis with the NWCC was elected to Chair-Elect

  3. Miscellaneous.

Jana Johnson agreed to contact Rick Becker regarding the Internet Disaster Documentation and Location Standards to clarify if the standards have passed or not. The word was that standard is on the NITC's February 22 meeting agenda. Assuming it is approved, it will be posted the following day.

RSS feeds, blogging and podcasting where brought up as topics of interest for future meetings.

Greg Votava mentioned that HHSS has tried posting 15 second sound bites on their site and have had great luck with the radio picking them up and using them on the air.

Jana Johnson brought up the question of reforming an accessibility committee. Concerns were addressed regarding state agencies knowledge of 508 in general and how to enforce the current standards. The solution is to start strategizing to increase the overall webmasters' group attendance, so that more webmasters are aware of the standards we create and how they can benefit an agency and the agency's website users. Nora Tallmon with Nebraska Banking and Financing volunteered to contact each state agency and find out who the webmaster is for the agency. All members will brainstorm ideas on how to market the group to those webmasters not currently attending.

  4. Adjourn.
